An African Wildlife Safari has been on my travel bucket list for longer than I can remember, so when offered the opportunity to explore Tanzania on a National Geographic Signature Land Expedition, I jumped at the chance! Knowing that National Geographic Signature Land Expeditions are now part of the Disney Collection—and that safety always comes first with Disney—gave me even more confidence to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to Africa.

Lots of preparation goes into planning a trip to Africa, beginning with finding the perfect itinerary. This part was easy! National Geographic’s On Safari: Tanzania’s Great Migration offers an ideal introduction to the best wildlife viewing areas in Tanzania: Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and The Serengeti. And since education is a key component of any Nat Geo Expedition, the immersive itinerary also featured opportunities to connect with the locals, learn about the culture firsthand, and discover the fascinating significance of the geography, archeology, habitats, migration patterns, and flora and fauna of this remarkable destination.

National Geographic Expeditions outfitted us with some of the basic necessities: backpack, water bottle, easily identifiable luggage straps, and of course, a map of Tanzania, all of which arrived beautifully packaged about two weeks prior to the trip.

We had to be cognizant of the 33-pound luggage capacity when packing. Still, with a little strategizing and some great packing cubes, I managed to fit in all the essentials, including a camera, binoculars, medications, a hat, breathable pants and tops, a jacket, hiking shoes, sandals, and a couple of versatile dresses for the evenings. Overpacking is strongly discouraged since you move around quite a bit, and the convenient laundry service at each lodge makes it easy to simply wash and re-wear daily safari attire!

Our expedition group consisted of about 20 explorers, primarily solo travelers like myself, couples, mother/daughter duos, and friends. We all shared the same objective…to discover this beautiful country’s geography, wildlife, and culture and learn as much as we could along the way. Our common goals and interests set the tone for a wonderful group dynamic during our time together in Africa. We even started connecting with each other before the trip via a dedicated Facebook group!

Flights to Africa are long, no matter where you are traveling from! I was grateful for the affordable upgrade to Business Class offered during check-in—what a difference it makes when you can sleep on the flight and feel refreshed upon landing in Arusha!

After getting through customs, we were met by a National Geographic safari guide who drove us to our first hotel, the five-star Gran Melia Arusha, set against the backdrop of magnificent Mount Meru. Early the next morning, we met up with the rest of the guides, the Nat Geo wildlife and photography expert, and our fellow explorers for an overview of the week ahead.

We could tell immediately how knowledgeable and experienced our guides were. They were so eager to introduce us to their beautiful country! Our bags were swiftly loaded into one of four “safari limos,” and we headed out to Lake Manyara for our first of two game drives in this exquisite National Park.

The stunning Rift Valley landscape set the stage for a truly breathtaking experience. From herds of elephants trekking across the lush landscape to infant baboons swinging from the treetops, it was an awe-inspiring introduction to Tanzania’s vast beauty and wildlife. Pictures can’t begin to capture the exquisite beauty and abundant wildlife activity within this wildlife oasis! Within the four natural habitats, there was always something and someone new to discover. The stunning floral and fauna were impressive enough to be the main attraction - particularly the 1000-year-old Sycamore and African Baobab trees. But wildlife is the draw here, and our two game drives in Lake Manyara brought us up close and personal with more animals than we dreamed possible. We encountered giraffes, zebras, buffalo, elephants, warthogs, monkeys, baboons, impala, lizards, and exotic birds in all their glory. We witnessed journeys and herds, troops and flocks, gangs and dazzles.

Little did we know this safari preview was just the “soup” as our guides described it, and the “appetizer” and “main course” were yet to come!! It was hard to imagine that Tanzania could get much better than this!

Over the next two days, we settled in at one of the most wonderfully unique and peaceful places you could imagine…Plantation Lodge. One of the highlights from our time at the Lodge was a special evening with the local Maasai Chief, William, who founded a lion conservation project aimed at increasing the tolerance people have towards lions, reopening corridors of connectivity, and restoring a healthy landscape that sustains all forms of life. William shared a thought-provoking presentation about efforts to enable lasting coexistence between people and lions in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, an area we would soon discover in all its glory. But the most impactful conversations with William happened after the presentation, during an intimate dinner with our National Geographic Expeditions group. William graciously helped us better understand the Maasai traditions, culture, and customs…so different from our own. We were profoundly grateful to Chief William for his willingness to listen, share, and educate with an open mind and open heart. A memorable evening indeed. To learn more about William’s lion conservation efforts, visit www.Kopelion.org

Having learned about the Maasai Tribe from our new friend William, we were anxious to spend time in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a protected, multi-use land area in Tanzania where the local Masaii and their livestock coexist with the area’s abundant wildlife. This expansive area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most famous safari destinations, consisting of magnificent grass plains, acacia woodlands, and crater-filled highlands. Our Ngorongoro hotel for the next two nights offered spectacular views of the crater, but nothing compares to being down IN the crater surrounded by wildlife so close you can practically touch them. On our afternoon game drive in Ngorongoro, we saw black rhinos, hippos, zebra, giraffe, gazelles, lions, lion cubs, elephants, warthogs, buffalo, golden Jekyll, and wildebeest…tons and tons of wildebeest! Nothing prepares you for the overwhelming beauty of this place and the people and animals who call it home. It was literally like being in the pages of a National Geographic magazine. The whole experience was incredible!

The great thing about this itinerary is that we visit each park or conservation area twice, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon when the animals are most active. For our second game drive in Ngorongoro, we left bright and early to catch a spectacular sunrise before slowly making our way into the picturesque crater. Although we covered much of the same ground the day before, it was a completely different experience in the early morning hours. The rising sun gave new light to a breathtaking caldera, teeming with animals and alive with activity. The animals were running, grazing, and playing, many with babies in tow. We watched in wonder as a pride of lions feasted on freshly killed wildebeest, laughed at the rambunctious lion cubs playing by the water’s edge, marveled at a majestic bull elephant meandering across the caldera, tracked hyena on the prowl, delighted in the hippos rolling around in a shallow stream, gazed in awe as a heard of wildebeest thundered by, held our breath as a family of elephants nibbled on the brush alongside us, and saw endless buffalo, gazelle, and zebras. You can never see too many zebras!! Later, we shared our morning discoveries over a lovely lakeside brunch in the bush, surrounded by all this wonderful wildlife against the most incredible backdrop! Filled with gratitude for this extraordinary adventure, we returned to our accommodations at the exquisite Serena Lodge just in time to beat the rain and catch the most magical double rainbow over the caldera!

Each day brings new discoveries with National Geographic Expeditions On Safari in Tanzania, and one of the most profound discoveries occurred during a presentation with National Geographic Expert in Residence, Louise Leakey. Louise joined us at Serena Lodge for two enlightening presentations about the groundbreaking paleontologist finds in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, led by her famous grandparents, Louis and Mary Leakey. It was fascinating to hear about Mary Leakey’s 1959 discovery of Homo Habilis, one of the earliest members of the human genus, at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Later, we visited Olduvai Gorge and descended into the gorge to walk the grounds where the Leakey’s made their groundbreaking discoveries. After a local guide shared the science behind identifying fossils and bones, it was our turn to explore the gorge and make our own discoveries! This focus on education is one of the many distinctions that sets National Geographic Expeditions apart from other adventure travel. They don’t just show and tell; they immerse and engage!

Another key distinction with National Geographic Expeditions is that a portion of the proceeds from every trip is given to the National Geographic Society to help further the efforts of scientists, conservationists, explorers, and educators working to make a difference in our world. Much of that work takes place in Serengeti National Park, one of the world’s most famous and significant wildlife sanctuaries and the final stop on our spectacular safari. National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative is one of the organizations funded by the Nat Geo Society. The Initiative facilitates research and conservation projects aimed at halting the decline of the big cat population and protecting their critical habitats. Cats like lions, cheetahs, and leopards…all of which call the vast Serengeti home. A highlight of this trip for me was witnessing these iconic cats in their natural habitats (and completing our search for the Big Five!), knowing that my participation in a National Geographic Signature Land Expedition helps protect their environment and safeguard the future existence of big cats living in the Serengeti and big cats living in the Serengeti and elsewhere.

As exciting as it was to get up close and personal with these ferocious felines, we were witness to many other wonderous animal encounters throughout our time in the Serengeti. Each year, millions of wildebeest (followed by gazelles and zebras) journey to the endless grasslands of Serengeti National Park during what is known as the Great Migration, the greatest wildlife spectacle in Africa. The wildebeest tend to stay in one place and give birth to their calves until the end of the rainy season (typically late April), and while we did not see the actual migration, we watched in awe as vast herds of wildebeest, graceful gazelles, and dazzling zebras thundered past us with their adorable newborns keeping pace with the packs.

From the incredible lodge accommodations at Gran Melia Serengeti to the abundant game drives with our intuitive guides who expertly navigated the endless grasslands and woodland savannas like they were their own backyards, our time in the Serengeti was truly transformational. It’s an indescribable experience to come within mere yards of lions, cheetahs, elephants, and giraffes in the wild and feel no fear—just awe and wonder. That’s how close our expert safari guides got us to these majestic animals for the most memorable encounters, all the while ensuring our safety and comfort took precedence above all else.

Asante sana National Geographic Expeditions for an unforgettable experience on safari in Tanzania. From Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, you challenged us to dig deeper, look beyond the obvious to make new discoveries, and uncover hidden truths about ourselves and others that can only be achieved through the wonderful gift of travel.

So much gratitude for this extraordinary journey and all the wonderful people we met along the way. This really was the adventure of a lifetime!

The Ritz Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes is truly the lap of luxury. Beautifully attentive staff, an opulent pool, excellent dining choices, amazing spa…why even think of leaving to head to a theme park during your stay? Honestly, the theme parks are almost forgotten during your time at this gorgeous resort. But if you must, it’s only a 20-minute ride to Disney World and even closer to Universal Orlando and SeaWorld, and at the end of a long day it’s quite the oasis to return to after a day in the parks.

Nothing is more welcome on arrival than the legendary Ritz Carlton service at the resort’s gorgeous lobby, making for a wonderful first impression. Hip, yet sophisticated, you’ll find loads of white marble, contemporary and shimmery furnishings with gold accents, even a dedicated children’s area right off the check-in area for the kids to relax with miniature beanbag chairs, plush toys, and a TV.

Step over to the Lobby Lounge for small plates and cocktails, a spot totally transformed with a long bar fronted by canary yellow chairs and below a comfortable seating area overlooking the pool through massive windows.

A Suite Life
A stay in one of the Executive Suites makes a vacation extra special with plenty of room to spread out in your living area and separate bedroom. At just under 1,000 square feet, there are two balconies (the balcony in the bedroom is extra large and quite deep), two 65” TVs, and an additional half bath.

Deluxe linens on a cushy king bed with perfect pillows assures a great night’s sleep, and the bath was large enough to roam in with a double sink vanity, separate tub and large shower, and walk-in closet.

And the view! Overlooking the resort’s pool and lake, lush golf course, and as far as the eye can see for miles and miles in the distance, you can even catch the area fireworks in the evenings. Seriously, you’ll never want to leave!

Club Level
I highly recommend upgrading to Club Level—Orlando’s best!—where the lounge, staff, and food offerings are worth any additional cost. I love this place!!

With a hearty breakfast, delicious lunch spread, afternoon snacks, evening heavy hors d’oeuvres, and after-dinner dessert, candies, and cordials, it’s a dream come true. Add to that specialty coffees, great wines and champagne, beer, beverages, even mixed drinks, this is about as full-service as it comes. The concierge staff goes out of their way to please, and can arrange whatever your heart desires in the way of activities and dining.

There’s a spacious balcony the length of the lounge where you’ll find me mornings and evenings enjoying the view of the pool, lake, golf course, and beyond. And the big temptation is the cookie humidor and jars of candy on your way out. It makes it difficult to want to leave the property when this is always waiting for you!

Dining
To complete the picture is a world-class spa, where I enjoyed one fantastic massage, to many superb dining options. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at Fairways Pub, located in the Golf Club, servicing the resort’s 18-hole Greg Norman-designed golf course. From super appetizers of mini pretzel balls with smoked gouda cheese dip to fried calamari with spicy sriracha mayo, juicy hamburgers and truffled fries, and Cajun crusted grouper, the food and atmosphere is perfect for a lazy afternoon.

I adore Highball & Harvest, the resort’s casual breakfast, lunch, and dinner, farm-to-table restaurant featuring updated Southern cuisine and hand-crafted cocktails. The Southern Spread of pimento cheese and pickled vegetables, the rightly famous Parker House rolls, shrimp & grits, or the ever-changing market fish served with groats and marmalade—you simply can’t go wrong.

All the Rest!
If that isn’t enough to keep you busy there’s always a plethora of outdoor activities such as kayak eco-tours, a mountain bike trail, tennis, bocce ball courts, guided fishing excursion and instruction, sunrise resort safaris, falconry experiences, and the Aquacourse 360, a water obstacle course. And kids will love Ritz Kids, a supervised activity program for children ages 4-12. What more can I say—this is one amazing place!

When the exciting invitation came for a media preview of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland® Resort, I absolutely knew there was no way I would pass on it. And also knew that I would not be able to resist staying over a few days to enjoy one of the most gorgeous areas of the U.S., the Orange County beaches. This meant I would not only be able to enjoy one of my very favorite places—the Disneyland theme parks and Disneyland® Hotel—but also head to the SoCal coast for a stay at the one of the most stunning hotels around, The Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel. It proved to be the perfect mix of fun and sun, fantasy world and real world, adrenaline rush and total relaxation.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort
First the most anticipated new land opening in Disney Parks history, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. There was so much hype surrounding it that I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but I have to say it is nothing short of incredible! Guests are completely immersed in the world of Star Wars™, even without the main attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, not quite open yet; however, rest assured there is plenty to see and do right now.

Wander to your heart’s content on the remote planet of Batuu, a landscape of towering mountains and weathered buildings, smugglers and bounty hunters, all surrounded by the sights, the sounds, the smells, and taste of Black Spire Outpost.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run
I guarantee you’ll be struck speechless and at a standstill as you round the corner and come to a screeching halt at the first glimpse of the most magnificent attraction setting yet in a Disney park, the massive Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, particularly mind-boggling after dark. It truly is a sight to behold!

Thankfully the long queue is entertaining as the line wraps around the 110-foot Millennium Falcon itself then through the “warehouse”, with the best views of the Falcon at the end of the line from above, again particularly awesome at night. After being prepped with the background story of your flight from Hondo Ohnaka, one of Disney’s best Audio-Animatronic figures ever, you’ll enter The Chess Room, the perfect place to snap a few photos.

Here you’ll receive your assignment: pilot, gunner, or engineer (two of each per flight for a total of 6 riders). If you are in luck you’ll be chosen as a pilot which allows a seat at the front of the cockpit with an unobstructed view. I was an engineer at the rear and was definitely distracted by those sitting in front of me. While the ride is more like a super hyped-up, interactive version of Star Tours, the setting is magnificent and well worth any wait you may have to experience.

Galaxy’s Edge Dining
Then take in the most happening place around, Oga’s Cantina (kids are welcome) for wild cocktails and musical entertainment courtesy of droid DJ R-3X, a former Starspeeder 3000 pilot. Or when hunger strikes, pick up some tasty local grub at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo including Felucian Garden Spread, a plant-based kefta on a bed of hummus served with pita; Fried Endorian Tip-yi, translated as crispy chicken, potato mash, and herb gravy; and Smoked Kaadu Ribs with a blueberry corn muffin and cabbage slaw.

And do visit the Milk Stand to try the non-dairy blue (Luke Skywalker’s drink of choice) or green milk, frosty concoctions with a delicious coconutty taste. At Kat Saka’s Kettle is Outpost Mix (popcorn) and specialty Batuuan Coke bottles.

Galaxy’s Edge Shopping

If you want to bring home an unusual gift or two head to the Creature Stall to adopt creatures of the galaxy such as porgs, tauntauns, wampas, and more.

Die-hard Star Wars fans will not want to miss the gear at First Order Cargo, where the biggest splurge is $6,600 Stormtrooper armour! Of course you must visit Savi’s Workshop to build your custom lightsaber to the tune of $200, or to Droid Depot for your customized droid starting at $100.

Needless to say, it’s one exciting summer at Disneyland Resort, and there is still availability to plan a trip to see this one-of-a-kind attraction.

The Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel

So, my wild adventure did come to an end, and I was definitely ready for relaxation and ocean vistas. Nothing screams luxury more than a Ritz Carlton and the property at Laguna Niguel really does represent the brand well. The hotel's setting, perched above a bluff overlooking the Pacific surrounded by sea views and contemporary touches, makes for the perfect vacation, with the bonus of legendary Ritz Carlton Gold Standard service.

Accommodations
Your seaside adventure begins on arrival as you are greeted by professional, friendly service and a massive live “beach-cam” behind the front desk. Fresh flowers are everywhere in exquisite arrangements, seating areas are scattered throughout the entry, some in front of a warm fire, and courteous bellman explain the layout of the hotel as they escort you and your luggage directly to your accommodations.

Our Club Level Ocean View room was the picture of luxury with a coastal soft and shimmery blue and beige palate, king bed made with luxurious linens, sweeping views of the Pacific from a small balcony, a work desk, and easy chair. In the walk-in closet are soft robes and slippers, and a mirrored closet near the balcony holds an under counter refrigerator, coffeemaker, and electronic safe. Rooms on the ground floor, the Fireside category rooms, come with a wonderful fire pit so be sure to request your preference.

The room’s elegant bath, overflowing with rich Carrera marble, includes double sinks, a deep tub/shower, lovely Asprey bath products, and a toilet area separated by a louvered door. My only complaint is the lack of quality lighting with only one overhead fixture.

If you’ve never stayed Club level at a Ritz Carlton you have truly missed out, and this resort is no exception. The recently updated and enlarged Club Lounge features a variety of seating options, a gorgeous fireplace, and outdoor balcony seating.

A list of amenities a mile long includes culinary offerings throughout the day—breakfast, light lunch, heavy appetizers in the evening, and after-dinner desserts—along with a nice array of beverages, a wine dispenser, champagne, and an array of liquor, perfect for cocktail creation. And . . . rows of glass jars filled with all kinds of yummy candy! The Club concierge staff are wonderful and oh-so helpful in arranging whatever your heart desires to make your vacation experience a memorable one.

I also got a glimpse at a one-bedroom Ocean Suite, perfect for a family, with two king beds, one in the bedroom and the other a pull-down in the living area that is actually part of the bookshelf behind the sofa. Two full baths add to the allure. Request a ground floor suite in order to enjoy the patio’s fire pit.

Outdoor Adventure
Your outdoor experiences are endless given the hotel’s location on Salt Creek Beach, an avid surfing spot. It’s a steep walk down but the resort provides a shuttle service if you wanting to skip the huff and puff on your way back up. Stop at the resort’s beach concierge for umbrellas and chairs, and come prepared to be one of many on this very popular beach. Along the beach you’ll find miles of walking paths leading in both directions. Hang a left to reach the Dana Point Preserve trail (pick up a map from concierge) filled with native plants and animals and overwhelmingly gorgeous ocean views, perfect for whale watching in season November to May.

Dining Options
With Club food offerings and several wonderful restaurants and bars, we rarely felt the need to go elsewhere to dine. Raya, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner offers delicious cuisine along with stunning ocean views. Sunlight streams through massive windows, perfect for sunset gazing. My Cali omelet was the perfect way to start the morning with a healthy mix of tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and, my favorite omelet ingredient, avocado.

Nextdoor is Bar Raya where we found ourselves time and time again enjoying the exotic cocktails and pleasant ambience.

If you are wanting upscale dining go for enoSTEAK, but by far the most popular venue is 180blũ, an outdoor spot with live music Friday and Saturday, small plates and desserts from Raya, and fantastic sunsets.

So in short, do yourself a favor and plan for a Southern California vacation to enjoy the benefits of not only Disneyland Resort but the addition of the upscale Ritz Carlton, Laguna Niguel. It’s the best of both worlds!

If you want the very best views of Tokyo with 360-degree panoramic vistas including Tokyo Skytree and Mt. Fuji, then you can’t go wrong in choosing The Ritz Carlton. Tokyo’s tallest hotel with its striking 45th-floor Sky lobby and convenient location above Tokyo Midtown shopping center and Roppongi Station is a sure bet. As always the Ritz Carlton service is above reproach, and the overwhelming sense of welcome is just the ticket in a country where you only know a few words of the language.

The lush lobby is a delight, filled with massive flower arrangements and water features, and afternoon tea in the lobby lounge is quite the place.

But it is the hotel’s “wow” of a bar with unparalleled views of the city and 120 different varieties of whiskey (if you haven't yet tried Japanese whiskeys you are in for a treat) that got my attention. You could sit forever here, sip cocktails, and stare at the twinkling lights of this amazing city.

We enjoyed dinner our first evening in the hotel’s 45th-floor, multi-use, sleek and contemporary Hinokizaka, where you’ll find four separate areas featuring the best of Japanese cuisine: kaiseki, sushi, tempura and teppanyaki.

We couldn’t resist trying the multi-course kaiseki, where seating for two faces the wall of windows overlooking the dramatic vistas of the city. Waited on by a pleasant kimono-clad hostess, service here was exemplary as was the food.

You must book airport transfers with the hotel’s limousine service, which includes a Rolls-Royce Phantom!

And the 20-meter lap pool is phenomenal, where on clear days you are treated to a view of Mt. Fuji. What could be better?

The only slight disappointment was in our somewhat dark and slightly bland Deluxe Room (although spacious at 560 square feet), done in shades of grey, purple, and red. The luxurious bed, however, was just ticket after a long flight from the West Coast with its comfortable mattress and deluxe linens. The marble bath was nice and roomy with two separate vanity sinks, corner shower, “smart” Toto toilet, and deep tub.

And it’s tough to complain at all when what really matters it the chance to eyeball that amazing view from your window!

Are you yearning for a cabin in the woods, yet are torn between that and a trip to Walt Disney World® Resort? Well, how about a combo vacation, something that can easily be accomplished at Copper Creek Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. These delightful accommodations are an ingenious new addition to the Walt Disney World scene with 26, two-bedroom, two-bath cabins nestled waterside and set among the pine trees on the shore of Bay Lake.

Gorgeous native landscaping surrounds each cabin sleeping eight in a king bed, queen bed, fold out bed, queen-size sleeper sofa, and sleeper chair (wood flooring is found throughout). On entry are the two bedrooms across the hall from each other, each with in-suite baths.

The larger master bedroom holds a king bed with Native American motif headboard, desk/bureau, armoire, TV, and it’s own exit to the porch near the outdoor fireplace fronted with two comfy chairs. The master bath has double sinks in a cream quartz vanity, in-mirror TV, large shower, and separate oversized bubble-jet tub with a wall of marble surround.

The guest room comes with a queen bed, window alcove seating, a single bed that folds out of the cabinetry, and a TV. In the bath is a single sink bath with a pebble floor shower.

The living area’s focal point is the double-sided stone fireplace (the other side extends to the screened-in porch). Two walls of windows overlooking the water are controlled by two sets of remote shades (one for transparency and one for privacy). Surrounding the fireplace are the sleeper sofa, three easy chairs, and a long bench-style coffee table.

The open kitchen has a sink, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and full-size refrigerator. Nearby is a freestanding, small granite island with seating for four, and next to it is an oversized dining table seating 8.

And best of all is the cabin’s oh-so-nostalgic screened-in, wraparound porch with flagstone flooring, picnic table, double-sided fireplace, and hot tub—just envision yourself in this setup early morning watching the “world” come alive with a nice mug of coffee in hand!

Don’t expect to see the fireworks except from a handful of cabins (I’ve heard Cabin #1 and #26 are the best!).

If it’s nature that speaks to you then consider a stay at the sparkling new Copper Creek Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Here you’ll find an enchanting scene of roaring waterfalls, rushing creeks, and towering pines. And if you are looking for the best of the best, then look no further than one of the four, 3-bedroom Grand Villas. These corner units, one on each of the first four floors, are absolutely ideal for extended family vacations. Sleeping a total of 12 people in one king-size bed, 4 queen-size beds and one queen-size sleeper sofa, they come with a whopping 3,200 square feet. Talk about room to spread out!

These villas are gorgeous, and the open living, dining, kitchen plan is one that encourages family gathering time. Hardwood flooring throughout mixed with area rugs and beamed wood ceilings add to the slightly rustic yet sophisticated look. The living area comes with an oversized, cream-hued sectional sofa—part of which is a queen sleeper—two chocolate brown easy chairs, sofa table, and oval coffee table. A big-screen TV surrounded by loads of cabinetry and shelving space is perfect for family viewing. And here you’ll also find a lengthy but shallow balcony overlooking Geyser Point.

The massive dining table, set in an alcove, seats 12, and there’s a small stand-up balcony as well.

Overlooking the fully-equipped kitchen is a large quartz island composed of cream-colored quartz which holds the sink and seating for 6. The kitchen is one that you can truly cook in with a large refrigerator, electric stove, microwave, and dishwasher.

On one side of the living area is a master bedroom and the first of two guest rooms, both of which share a balcony or patio overlooking Geyser Point.

In the master bedroom is a king bed with a leather headboard with a Native American motif, easy chair and ottoman, desk, large bureau, TV, and small walk-in closet.

The impressive master bath is semi-separated by a chocolate-colored marble wall into two areas: one area with double sinks set in a cream quartz vanity with in-mirror TV, an oversized shower with pebble flooring and two shower heads—one of them a rain shower—and a separate toilet area; the other area has a stand-alone, bubble-jet tub and a wall of high, curtained windows.

Next to the master is a guest room with two queen beds, desk, bureau, and TV, and across the hall a single sink bath with shower.

On the opposite side of the living area is a guest room with a fun Native American wood-paneled wall, two queen beds with explorer map motif runners, a bureau, TV, and desk, and a balcony or patio overlooking the courtyard pool area. Attached is a single sink bath with shower and walk-in closet.

Other benefits include a stacked washer/dryer and a nice welcome amenity.

Now if you are looking for waterside options then one of the Copper Creek Cabins is your best bet. More on that to come!

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Japan Now

I recently visited Japan for the first time. From the incredibly kind people to the amazing sights and delicious food, this is what brings visitors back to Japan time and again.

Safe, Clean, and Orderly Way of Life

Japan is considered the safest country in Asia with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry somewhat about pickpockets, but really there should be no hesitation about walking alone day or night just about anywhere in the country. If you lose something on the street or in the subway chances are very good that you will actually get it back.

Japan is spotlessly clean, much like Singapore; however, in Japan cleanliness is simply part of the culture and not something demanded by law. You’ll be hard pressed to find a single piece of litter on the streets and in the subway. And the strangest thing is there are hardly any trashcans to be found. One reason is that Japanese people do not eat or drink on the streets, cutting down considerably on trash. Littering is not part of the culture, and you’ll find that Japanese people will simply take their rubbish home with them rather than dispose of it when they are out and about.

What I particularly love is how everyone lines up and takes their turn in an orderly fashion for just about everything, and does so in a calm and amazingly quiet manner. No matter if it’s at an elevator or escalator, whether in the subway or on the street, in line at a restaurant or at a bank, order prevails. They abide by social codes, etiquette, and manners at all times. You’ll find the only people talking on the subway are foreigners, and if the Japanese must talk on their cell phones in public they usually do so while covering their mouths so as not to disturb others.

Tranquil and Lovely Sights

Golden Pavilion, Kyoto

Bamboo Forest, Arashiyama, Kyoto

With an abundance of fascinating sights, Japan is a unique blend of both traditional and contemporary sights. I have to say that I’ve never felt such a sense of peace and calm while touring—again the Japanese are so orderly. Even the smallest of temples, where you oftentimes are the only person there, are stunning. In Kyoto alone are over 2,000 temples and shrines, and nearby Nara is home to no less than 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial to Tokyo’s Imperial Palace to Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion, there are more sights than possible to see in one or several trips.

Outstanding Food and Drink

From 3-Michelin-starred restaurants to tiny hole-in-the-wall places, you almost can’t go wrong when it comes to choosing a place to dine. From sashimi to sushi, to noodle joints and tempura counters, there is a culinary wonder around every corner. One of my favorite experiences was in Kyoto where I tried tonkatsu, Japanese pork cutlets, coated in panko breadcrumbs then deep fried and sliced. You can choose from several types of pork—for me it was Berkshire–then pick either the leaner pork tenderloin or a fattier cut of pork loin. All are served with several types of sauces along with a mound of raw shredded cabbage. Grind up your bowl of toasted sesame seeds and add your preferred sauce for additional dipping flavor. Delicious!

Or perhaps a traditional Kaiseki, a set, multi-course meal, each beautifully plated and elegantly presented, with the chef striving for excellence in every detail. Each dish is offered at the peak of freshness, all in a formal, calm atmosphere. Begin with an appetizer, then on to soup, a seasonal platter then sashimi, a vegetable course, then another soup course, fish followed by a simmered dish and a steamed dish, the meal goes on until dessert. It’s expensive, but I promise worth every penny.

Wabi-sabi

Wabi-sabi is the art of transience and imperfection, the quintessential Japanese aesthetic. It is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. And believe me you will come to appreciate this way of thinking during your time in Japan. A moss garden, the patina of an old metal wall, the asymmetry of a ceramic bowl. It also has a philosophical implication as well such as letting go of perfection and accepting change.

Have your tour guide educate you in wabi-sabi, and you will start looking for it in everything you see and perhaps apply this rustic simplicity and pleasure in the imperfect to your life permanently.

Friendly and Courteous People

The Japanese people will literally go out of their way to help you, and oftentimes you don’t even need to ask since they seem to sense your confusion or dismay. So gracious and kind, they never want you to feel uncomfortable in any way. They practice the concept of “omotenashi,” a genuine kindness towards guests, an awareness for individual needs, and the effort to always go the extra mile. Where there is this ingrained civility, traveling in a foreign country and not speaking the language is so less daunting.

Where else but a Bulgari Hotel would you find an armored car out front delivering a haul of jewelry for the brand’s Wild Pop High Jewelry Collection show? This is exactly what we encountered on our departure from the Bulgari Hotel Beijing, an oasis in the middle of a massive city surrounded by a park-like setting of trees and bordered by the Liangma River. Located in the heart of the Beijing’s Embassy District, next-door is the Genesis Art Foundation, nearby is the National Art Museum of China as well as upscale shopping and the fashionable bars of Sanlitun, and the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square is only a 25-minute drive away.

The hotel’s luxuriously sleek and contemporary Italian ambiance is soothing yet exciting. In the lobby are the front desk and an inviting living room area with low-slung sofas and chairs in smoky earthy hues. Gorgeous coffee table books are scattered around for perusing, and walls are hung with photos of celebrities wearing Bulgari pieces. Special touches include exquisite hand blown Murano lamps and a serene bamboo garden.

Sleek and Relaxing Accommodations
Our Premium Guest Room was quite spacious (in fact some of the largest rooms in Beijing can be found at this hotel) with 650 square feet and sweeping views of the river and Beijing’s skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. Everything is so meticulously perfect, from the leather, lacquered, and woven rattan walls, lightly finished blond wood flooring, marble coffee table, rattan sofa, oversized TV, and high-tech touch lighting system.

In the bath is a vanity dressing table with loads of drawer space, walk-through closet, wet area with deep soaking granite tub and rain shower, separate toilet area with heated Toto washlet, double sinks set in black granite above which is an in-mirror TV, and, of course, Bulgari bath products! I particularly love the inclusive mini-bar filled with sodas, juice, bottled water, and beer.

If you are looking for more space consider the Deluxe Suite with over 1,300 square feet, a spacious separate bedroom, corner dining table, and soaking tub with a view.

Dining
Il Ristorante, overseen by three-Michelin-starred chef Niko Romito, focuses on simplistic and contemporary Italian cuisine with over-the-top service. Think updated renditions of traditional lasagna, or a crispy suckling pig with orange caramel sauce, or perhaps a dish of black cod with leek sauce and crispy spinach.

Don’t miss pre- or post-dinner drinks next-door at Il Bar. Take a seat at their signature hammered and polished copper bar and have the magician of a bartender whip you up one of the specialty cocktails or an Italian apertivo. When the weather is nice head outside to the relaxing terrace for drinks overlooking the sculpted gardens and Chinese pines.

Spa and Gym
Additional facilities include the two-story Bulgari Spa with 11 treatment rooms and featuring traditional Chinese techniques such as Himalayan Crystal Healing and Qi Balancing. Your eyes will bug out at the spectacular 25-metre heated indoor pool surrounded by relaxing spa cabana beds and a glittering mosaic whirlpool with waterfall—it’s as if you are visiting a modern Roman bath. And next-door is WORKSHOP Gymnasium with Technogym and Kenesis equipment; if there’s time schedule a session or two with one of their expert instructors.

Are you looking for a vacation spot offering a beautiful beach, an exclusive oasis to relax and soak up a classic atmosphere? Then Four Seasons Hotel, The Surf Club is the place for you. Located in Surfside, Florida and removed from the hubbub of South Beach’s party scene, this legendary beachfront property, opened New Year’s Eve 1930, (Elizabeth Taylor, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Frank Sinatra, even Winston Churchill frequented the place), has hosted history. Designed around the building’s original Mediterranean Revival architecture, the hotel’s three towers—a tower of guest rooms, a tower of suites, an a tower of private residences—frame and flank the original clubhouse. It truly brings a whole new era of stylish glamour to South Florida.

And I have to say I'm a complete sucker for any hotel that has someone waiting at every door to open it for you!

Gorgeous Accommodations

Our City View Room was a stunner with a full wall of windows overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, Collins Avenue, and the town of Surfside, and with 600 square feet there was more than enough room to spread out and enjoy. The king bed came with the most comfortable bedding imaginable, super high thread count sheets and soft down pillows. A modern sectional sofa sits in the corner of the room with a nifty dining table and adjoining work desk, and just outside is a frameless glass balcony with an unobstructed view. Other amenities include an oversized TV and a touch lighting system. You can’t help but be enamored with the room’s Tablet which you use for room service ordering, restaurant reservations, spa treatment bookings, even reading a variety of world newspapers and controlling the room’s lighting, temperature, drapes/sheers.

In the oversized marble bath are double sinks with plenty of adjoining counter space, a large tub, and huge shower. I adore the exclusive line of Geranium & Mandarin bath products, and always appreciate a choice of bath mood lighting.

If you are planning on bringing along the family, consider the hotel’s spacious suites ranging from one to four bedrooms. An Oceanfront Two-bedroom Suite comes with a terrace that just can’t be beat with sweeping views of the ocean. You also have your own dedicated elevator entrance, a full kitchen, 4-person counter dining, and plenty of living space with 2,000 square feet. King beds are found in both the master and guest room, there are two and a half baths, and room for 5 adults.

Sophisticated Dining

A local crowd of beautiful people arrive for dinner and drinks at the hotel’s stunning Champagne Bar and Sirenuse Restaurant, the famous Positano hotel’s first outpost outside of Italy. And the new “it” place is The Surf Club Restaurant by Chef Thomas Keller, located right off the hotel’s original entrance, with it’s nostalgic American cuisine of a bygone era (very similar to what I experienced at The Grill, Thomas Keller’s restaurant on the Seabourn ships).

Super Facilities

Let’s talk about the pool and the beach. The original historic Cabana Row lining both sides of the pool area has been re-envisioned to include super-cool, overnight cabana accommodations—oceanfront retreats featuring terrazzo floors inside and large wood deck lanais outside that replicate the original cabana floors—offering spectacular ocean views. Below the overnight cabanas are day cabanas, in the works to open soon. The adult-only pool is an oasis of tranquility, and there’s even a family pool located in front of the residential tower.

In-between the two is the Pool Restaurant and Bar, focusing on local Florida cuisine, which also services the beach.

Speaking of the beach, here you’ll find a relaxing setup of cushy lounge chairs and umbrellas with super service by a friendly and doting wait staff. We whiled away several happy hours here on this serene and almost deserted stretch.

The Spa and Kids For All Seasons Program

The Spa offers eight bright and airy treatment rooms, with two Spa Cabana Suites offering absolute privacy. All hotel guests, regardless of whether or not you have a spa treatment booked, are welcome in the spa’s eucalyptus steam room, sauna, and co-ed traditional hammam. Definitely make it point to stop in for some downtime, then stay a while at the tea lounge and relaxation room, whose private alcoves overlook the ocean.

Are you thinking that at such a sophisticated spot children aren’t welcome? Think again. It is, after all, a Four Seasons, renowned for their complimentary Kids For All Seasons program. The hotel’s fully supervised children’s club keeps kids ages 3-12 happy as clams, and guest rooms are stocked with children’s toiletries and child-size bathrobes.

Now all you need is the time to visit this special place. I promise you won’t regret it.

If you are looking for an edgy, sophisticated, and European feel yet don’t want to fly far to get it, consider Montreal as the perfect long weekend getaway. And if you like your hotels to be just as edgy as the city then choose the newly redesigned Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. Better yet, it’s only a 15-minute walk from its downtown location to Old Montreal, home to narrow cobblestone streets, historic sights, romantic restaurants and bars, and the flavor of a French city.

The lobby is bustling and modern so don’t expect a haven of peace and quiet on arrival. But it is certainly fun with cool lighting, chic seating, and one of the hippest and popular bars in town, Nacarat, with its outstanding array of mixology cocktails and refined setting.

You will be enthralled by the Fairmont's indoor urban marketplace, Marché Artisans, offering local products, a pastry counter, artisanal ice cream, bakery, fine groceries, a rotisserie, pizza, seafood, fresh meats and cheese, even a chocolate station as well as loads of places to perch while enjoying your goodies.

Rosélys Restaurant is another find offering all-day and evening dining featuring market-fresh ingredients and local products, and one phenomenal breakfast buffet. I particularly enjoyed the Montreal bagels, local cheese and yogurt, and the maple syrup baked beans!

My newly renovated Junior Suite came with a modern 60s look and 420 square feet. There’s a cozy living area with a queen sofa bed, coffee table, easy chair, TV, and half bath, separated by pocket doors to a bedroom with king bed and massive TV. While the bath was small it did come with a sizeable shower, single sink, updated lighting, and my favorite bath products, Fairmont’s signature and personalized Rose 31.

I highly recommend booking a room or suite on the Fairmont Gold level located on the 18th through 20th floors. For the additional price you receive the perk of accessing the gorgeous new Gold Lounge on the hotel’s 21st floor with super city views, relaxing and spacious seating areas, morning continental breakfast buffet, evening appetizers, and a curated honor bar.

Don’t miss the hotel’s lower level where you’ll find the Moment Spa, a super fitness room, the hotel’s indoor pool, and the entrance to Montreal’s Underground City, an amazing 19-mile network of pedestrian pathways filled with shopping malls, restaurants, department stores, hotels, and more.
