Checking In: The St. Regis Houston - Deep in the Heart of Texas

One of the hottest destinations in the U.S. is its 4th largest city, Houston, Texas, where a thriving dining scene has the New York Times declaring it one of the “great eating capitals of America.” Adding to that a vibrant art scene and amazing ethnic and cultural diversity, it makes it a must-see city. However, 5-star hotels are few and far between in this town, so in my books the St. Regis is the place to stay.

Setting
The hotel’s setting has a residential feel despite being mere blocks away from a major highway. Only minutes from the Galleria Houston, one of the most exclusive shopping malls in Texas, bordering on the swanky River Oaks neighborhood, and close enough to many of Houston’s major attractions, the location and the classic St. Regis service and general ambience of this property sets it apart.

My last stay was in a Deluxe Guest Room. While the room itself is spacious enough at 500 square feet with a king bed (also available with two double beds), two oversized leather chairs with ottoman/coffeetable, work desk, and views over the city from floor-to-ceiling windows, the bath is quite small and offering only one sink. But making up for the small bath are Remède bath products, the cushy bedding, and Italian linens. And a Texas-style surprise waiting in my room after dinner was just icing on the cake.

Dining
The hotel’s Remington Restaurant, bathed in light from the walls of surrounding windows, has a bit of a solarium feel. In good weather (which means never in the heat of summer), there’s even outdoor patio dining.

Serving American food, a few French bistro options, and definitely a twist of Texas flavor, my lunch of Remington shrimp Cobb salad hit the spot, and the friendly, competent service was a welcome Texas touch. It was a tossup between a late lunch here or afternoon high tea at the next-door Tea Lounge with butler service and live harp music, but tea would have to wait for another time.

When the sun goes down the Remington Bar is the place to be. Spacious and sophisticated with a masculine touch, sink into a nice leather chair in one of the darkened nooks and crannies and while away a few hours. It’s certainly where you’ll find me any time I’m in town.
