Barcelona: Top 6 Bucket List

After four trips to Spain I had yet to visit Barcelona. Not sure why that is, but when our Silversea cruise ended in Barcelona last month I knew I had to take the opportunity to stop over, at least for a few days (see my previous post on the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona). So much to see, so much to eat, wasn’t sure where to begin. But before I left this fascinating place, I managed to tick off quite a few things on my bucket list. I still want to return to really dig in and truly experience Barcelona, but for now here is a start.

Gaudí’s Casa Batlló image

#1 Visit Illa de la Discòrdia (Block of Discord)
Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample neighborhood is know for many things (great shops, wonderful hotels, Michelin starred restaurants), but the three Moderniste buildings by architects Domènech i Montaner, Puig i Cadafalch, and Gaudí take the cake with Gaudí’s Casa Batlló being the most remarkable. And just a few blocks away is Casa Milà, the Gaudi-designed apartment building with nary a straight line to be found.

La Familia Sagrada Barcelona image

#2 See La Sagrada Família
Gaudi’s soaring unfinished masterpiece is the most astonishing sight in Barcelona. It’s a bit off the beaten track and still a work in progress, but well worth the effort to see Barcelona’s icon.

Bar Cañete Barcelona image

#3 Find a Great Place for Tapas
There are countless tapas bars in Barcelona, but ask around and find the best for your personality. My very favorite is Bar Cañete on Carrer de la Unió, 17, just a few blocs off Las Ramblas, where tapas and small plates are served at the bar surrounding the kitchen by some of the city’s most personable waitstaff. Everything on the menu is delicious. Keep your eye on what’s being served and just point.

Barri Gòtic Barcelona image

#4 Explore the Barri Gòtic
I consider Barcelona’s ancient quarter the best in Europe. Something wonderful around every corner and down every alley. Find a great walking tour or hire a guide so you won’t miss one nook or cranny.

#5 Stroll Las Ramblas
Cutting through the heart of the city centre is Barcelona’s famous promenade, Las Ramblas, always hopping with throngs of people there to see and be seen. Find a place at one of the sidewalk cafes, preferably in the more upscale Northern area, and watch the fascinating parade pass you by.

La Boqueria Barcelona image

#6 Check Out La Boqueria
Barcelona’s largest food market just off Las Ramblas is one of the most exciting in Europe. Don’t miss a stroll through it—you may want to come hungry and grab a bite at one of the market’s many counter-seating-only restaurants.
